While the “official” Season of Creation ended Friday, Oct 4 2019 on the Feast of St. Francis, let’s pledge to keep our commitments all year and make new ones for the “Web of Life”!
We want to share with you some highlights, pictures and ways to keep living the spirit of this season all year long!
In Indiana
During the final days of the Season of Creation, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis planted over 200 trees at 13 parishes and through the efforts of individuals in their homes. St. Gabriel in Indianapolis led the way!
In St Mary-Of-The-Woods, the Sisters of Providence reached their goal of the Providence Climate Agreement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2 million pounds (in personal activities and in local or broader communities)!
Other highlights of this Season of Creation included the efforts of St. Thomas Aquinas grade school in Indianapolis to hold a school-wide Climate Strike including a prayer service, speaker, door decorating, and classes participating in a strike along the sidewalk.
All Over the World
2019 marked the first year Pope Francis proclaimed the Season of Creation for the Catholic Church. He kicked off this special time with a message for the World Day of Prayer for Creation on September 1.
Throughout the world hundreds of Season of Creation events took place ranging from tree plantings, prayer services, and climate strikes. The Season of Creation was concluded with a special tree planting and prayer service at the Vatican Gardens including leaders from indigenous regions.
